History of Facebook

Facebook was founded on February 4, 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg, Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes which 4 of them are students at Harvard University. As mentioned above, Facebook has become one of the biggest social networking sites in the world. Can’t be denied that Facebook users have grown significantly to hit over 2 billion in 2018. 

Before Facebook was founded, ZUckerberg actually founded one website called Facemash in 2003. Facemash allowed students to compare two female student pictures side by side and let them decide who was more attractive. The website was set up as a type of “hot or not” game for Harvard students. However, Facemash was quickly being shut down after 2 days due to Zuckerberg violating the university’s policy in the process of accessing resources for the site. This failure was not affecting Zuckerberg but instead this has made him an idea for Facebook where thefacebook was founded in February 2004.

TheFacebook was originally used by the students at Harvard to connect with other students at the university. Zuckerberg developed it mainly for the use of Harvard students to share their lives and connect with others in university. Along with the rising popularity, students from other universities such as Stanford, Yale, and Columbia were soon allowed to join. 

In September 2004, TheFacebook launched a new feature “Wall” which allows users to post things on their own page and also allows users’ friends to post on their wall. By the end of the year, TheFacebook hit 1 million users but still left after the leading online social network, Myspace, which reached five million members.

However, in 2005, TheFacebook has successfully expanded to more and more universities. It also changed the name to Facebook in the same year after the domain name was purchased for $200,000. Afterwards, Facebook introduced more features like “tagging” people in photos where they can be seen by other Facebook friends. Afterwards, Facebook allowed photo uploading too. Within the same year, Facebook has expanded to wider networks where students from high schools and universities in the US were allowed to join the service as well. By the end of 2005, Facebook had over 6 million users! 

As of September 2006, Facebook opened its membership to anyone who aged 13 and older with a valid email address. Everyone is able to access this free application. Facebook remained free to use but what special is that businesses can now use it for marketing and advertising to reach more people. This is where the company earns most of its money from advertisements on the website. 

After the year, the site has continually developed the features like launching of video, “like” button, “groups”, video calling, live stream and many more which we can see today. Believe that there would be more and more new features available on Facebook afterwards to give users a better and enhanced user experience.

Until today, we can see that Facebook still remains as one of the biggest social networking sites in the world which has brought a significant change to people’ lives. Instead of just being a social networking site that allows communication between people, Facebook has successfully turned it as a business platform for either small or big companies. Thanks to Facebook, we have access to more resources and also strengthened the relationship between people. Lastly, not to forget about being one of the youngest billionaires in the world, Zuckerberg has spreaded his wealth around and has donated part of his wealth to charity. We all know that “sharing is caring”, as what Zuckerberg has done.
